What is the Kardashev Scale?
Conceived by Soviet astronomer Nikolai Kardashev in 1964, the scale classifies civilizations by the total amount of energy they can harness. Carl Sagan later proposed a continuous interpolation formula so we can track progress between the major milestones:
K = (log₁₀(P) − 6) / 10
where P is power consumption in watts. Humanity currently sits at roughly K ≈ 0.73, well on the way to Type I.
Kardashev Calculator
K = 0.7290
P = 19.5 × 1012 W = 1.95e+13 W
K = (log₁₀(1.95e+13) − 6) / 10
K = (13.29 − 6) / 10 = 0.7290
